Offering private, semi-private and group lessons in both classic and skate technique, our instructors can help you reach your goals in order to make cross country skiing more fun and enjoyable. Please contact either instructor for more details – their email addresses are show below.

Group Lessons with Amy

If you are new to the sport or have been skiing for a while but would like to feel more fluid, improve technique, and feel more confident, then the 6 week progressive program is for you. In this course we will cover the fundamentals of the different techniques involved in skiing proficiently on varying terrain. The group setting will provide the opportunity to encourage and learn from one another – you just might meet your new skiing buddy!

6 Week Group Lesson – Classic

       • Wednesdays starting February 20th, 9:30 – 11am at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre
       • No lesson on March 20th. It will be rescheduled

6 Week Group Lesson – Classic/Skate (3 classic lessons, 3 skate lessons)

Group Lessons with Tarah

5 Week Group Lesson – Skate Technique for Efficiency

This skate skiing program is geared towards skiers that want to improve their technique for better, overall efficiency (and speed) in their skiing. The first hour of the lesson will focus on fine tuning skills across the different skate skiing techniques. The final 30 minutes will be a workout dedicated to applying new and/or improved skills – you choose your pace!

     • Tuesdays on February 12, 19, 26 & March 5, 12 from 10am – 11:30am at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre

5 Week Group Lesson – The FUNdamentals of Skate Skiing

Skate skiing is fun! It”s even more fun if you learn (or relearn) the foundational skills of the skate skiing techniques along with other motivated skiers. Whether you are new to skate skiing or feel your current skills just aren”t where you want them to be, this program is for you!

       • Mondays on February 11, 18, 25 & March 4, 11 from 10am – 11:30am at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre

Private, Semi-Private Classic/Skate Lessons

Private, semi private and group lessons are also available on request. If you have a specific technique you’d like to work on, need fine tuning in a certain aspect of your skiing, and/or prefer to have the one-to-one approach, we have varied availability throughout the week to help you reach your goals.
Please email Amy and Tarah to request a lesson. 24 hours in advance is much appreciated. Lesssons available weekdays and with limited availability on weekends.

Lesson Preparation/Information

If you are not a member of the Fernie Nordic Society, please make sure you pay for your day pass before the start of your lesson. You can get a $10 pass from a kiosk or online HERE.
Please arrive at the Nordic Centre 10-15 minutes prior to the start time of your lesson so you are ready to go when your lesson begins.
Be ready with equipment rented (if necessary) and waxed. Please contact your instructor for suggestions on where to rent equipment.
Be prepared for the weather (it can change quickly in Fernie). Dress in layers that don’t inhibit movement. Materials should be insulating and breathable. Have extras (sunglasses, mitts/gloves, toque, wind/water resistant layer, etc) in a bag just in case.
We try to go forward with lessons regardless of the weather, but if conditions become a safety risk, your instructor will contact you to postpone/cancel your lesson. We will do our best to accommodate your schedule for a make-up lesson.

How to register and pay

Please contact the appropriate coach according to the type of lesson you are requesting. Once your lesson has been confirmed, you will be request to pay via e-transfer to info@fernienordic.com (secret word NORDIC) or Paypal via Buy Now button on this page.

Both Amy and Tarah are NCCP licensed coaches with over 30 years of experience in Nordic skiing. Their backgrounds consist of instructing, recreational and competitive skiing. Whether your goal is to have an enjoyable winter activity to get you out of the house, keep in shape for your summer sports, or compete at the various races in our area, they can help get you there.

Lessons with Jeff

Jeff Williams is also one of our certified coaches who have given lessons to individuals and groups in past seasons. Jeff is busy with the race team but is occasionally available for lessons. Please contact info@fernienordic.com if you are arranging a lesson with Jeff.

SUMMER 2019 UPDATE – Training Program for Adults aged 50+

Program details
The Fernie Nordic Society is offering this spring and summer a physical training program aimed at adults aged 50 and older to prepare you for the ski season. It is not a learn to ski program. Our head coach, Jeff Williams, has set up this program in June 2018 and this is continuing this spring into the winter. It is not required to have participated in the previous sessions to join the winter session. Just make sure your 2018/2019 FNS membership is active.
What you get from this program:
       •  Training Peaks online training program
       •  Strength training day/month (Friday)
       •  Social runs/hikes/bikes

Training Schedule
May to September: General Preparation – strength training , running, biking, hiking
       •  2 strength sessions / week
       •  3 cardio sessions / week – can be running or biking
       •  2 Days off / week
You can do these on your own schedule – do what you can and if you have to miss one it is ok

September to December: Specific Preparation – specific strength, roller skiing, running, hiking
       •  2 strength sessions / week
       •  3 cardio sessions / week – can be running or biking
       •  2 Days off / week
You can do these on your own schedule – do what you can and if you have to miss one it is ok

December to March: On snow
       •  2 interval sessions (1 shorter, 1 longer)
       •  1 strength on snow session
       •  2 distance skis (1 shorter, 1 longer)
       •  On snow lesson/practice every other Friday – 6 total sessions
       •  Pre-season equipment and wax session
       •  Post-season wax session

Program cost:  $140 for the May to November session (only $20/month)
                             $100 for the December to March session (for all who continue the summer program)
                             $150 for the December to March session only (no prior dry land)
