The Great Pumpkin Hunt

Join the Fernie Nordic Society for Fernie's 3rd Great Pumpkin Hunt! Children 9 years and under (you don't need to be a Fernie Nordic Member, but having it already will let you bypass the waiver line!!) are invited to scour the forests surrounding the Warming Hut at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre (see map) for their own pumpkin. When the search is finished, kids can enjoy hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows by the bonfires. It promises to be a great morning of autumn fun!
A minimum donation of $5 per pumpkin hunter is requested and includes hot chocolate and marshmallows.
This is an outdoor event, so please dress your children appropriately and bring camping chairs or blankets if desired. We're tough Fernie folks so a little rain (or snow!) won't deter us - but if the weather turns really gnarly, we may postpone it - check our Facebook page the day of for an update.
In the past many families chose to bring wienies to roast on the bonfires and enjoyed a walk on the trails around the Warming Hut after the Hunt. Please plan to do this again!
The Fernie Nordic Society thanks Grow Children's Boutique, Save-On-Foods, Starbucks, Giv'er Shirts, Teck and Allan Phillips for supporting this great annual event!

Our 3rd Annual Great Pumpkin Hunt is planned for Saturday October 21, 2017 at 11:30 am at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre near the Mt. Fernie Provincial Park. Please arrive earlier to register each pumpkin hunter in time.

4th Fernie Nordic Winterfest

The Fernie Nordic Society is holding its Annual Winterfest at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre on the February 17-18 weekend. Everyone is welcome, club members and non-members alike, to participate in this popular event. We want to make it a fun event for young skiers as well as older ones. Our volunteers are organizing the event and the participation fees are kept low: free on Saturday and $5 on Sunday for FNS members and non-members alike.

It is really a community event that includes our fun annual race. Come to ski, come to race, or come to cheer! Compete against your friends and enjoy the great trails. There are several categories to choose from, short ones for the young skiers and longer distances for the older kids and adults and even a 'team' category with an adult pulling a chariot and a passenger! The keyword here is FUN, so wear a funny hat or costume if you dare!

The Fernie Nordic Winterfest event will be held on Saturday and Sunday Feb 17-18, 2018 at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre near the Mt Fernie Provincial Park. Open to members and non-members alike. No trail pass required when you enter one of these events.

Racing Rocks! starts at 11:30 am on Saturday at the Nordic Centre. Parents feel free to participate with your kids!  There is a scavenger hunt for the little ones and a Barkley Marathon style race for the bigger kids! At 11:30 all racers gather to pull their page number out of the book. Once everyone has their page number, there will be a mass start to 5 different stations along Jackrabbit loop and Cedar loop. At each station, the racer will need to rip out the page from the book that matches their number and stuff it in their pocket! Hot dog BBQ afterward by donation.

On Sunday is our 6th Annual Fernie Community Fun Race. Register at www.webscorer.com and pay $5 per entry at bib pickup on Sunday. Our volunteers would like you to register before Saturday evening for better planning the event but, of course, you can still do it up to one hour before the event.
Two main groups: JUNIOR ages 3 to 16 as of Dec 2017 and ADULT 17yo+
Bib pickup starts at 10 am on Sunday

11:00 a.m. Masters Skate mass start (men/junior men) - Galloway Loop

Kootenay Cup Races

UPDATE: Both races are now completed. Links to the results are shown at the bottom of this page

The first races of the 2018 series will be held on the weekend of December 30-31, 2017 at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre, near Fernie, BC.

Following the previous success in the 2016 winter, the Fernie Nordic Society will be hosting the Teck Kootenay Cup race event again in Fernie. There will be two days of races, the first of five nordic ski races organized in the Kootenays area during the season.

The event is open to skiers of all ages and abilities. Memberships to any club is not required to take part. Participants from local clubs under the CCBC organization earn points for their club toward the Kootenay Cup which will be awarded at the end of the season. Our club, the Fernie Nordic Society, has won the Cup in two previous seasons due to some great participation by our member skiers. There is a challenge in here for other clubs.

The classic ski technique is used on the first day and the free technique (skate ski) on the second day. See more details of the races in the official Race Notice (click link to open) : race categories, schedule and suggested local accommodations.

PLEASE NOTE  This is also the end of the winter holiday week, so come and join us. If you are from out of town, please book accommodations very early.
