The Great Pumpkin Hunt

PAST EVENT

Join the Fernie Nordic Society for Fernie's 4th Great Pumpkin Hunt, our annual autumn fundraiser event! Children 9 years and under (you don't need to be a Fernie Nordic Member, but having it already will let you bypass the waiver line!!) are invited to scour the forests surrounding the Warming Hut at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre (see map) for their own pumpkin. When the search is finished, kids can enjoy hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows by the bonfires. It promises to be a great morning of autumn fun!
A small donation per pumpkin hunter is requested and includes hot chocolate and marshmallows.
This is an outdoor event, so please dress your children appropriately and bring camping chairs or blankets if desired. We're tough Fernie folks so a little rain (or snow!) won't deter us - but if the weather turns really gnarly, we may postpone it - check our Facebook page the day of for an update.
In the past many families chose to bring wienies to roast on the bonfires and enjoyed a walk on the trails around the Warming Hut after the Hunt. Please plan to do this again!
The Fernie Nordic Society thanks Our Sponsors and Allan Phillips for supporting this great annual event!

Our 4th Annual Great Pumpkin Hunt is planned for Saturday October 20, 2018 at 11:30 am at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre near the Mt. Fernie Provincial Park. Please arrive earlier to register each young pumpkin hunter in time. The event should end by 1:30 pm.

EVENT TERMINATED

This two day event was successful with the help of the many volunteers and sponsors of the event. Participants aged from 4 to 74 took part. Most skiers were from Kimberkey and Fernie with some outside help from Missoula, Crowsnest Pass and Scotland! A total of 59 skiers participated in the first day in the free technique (skate) event. The event included a special speed trap on the 700 metre long Runt trail to test for the fastest female and male skiers. Sydney Wilson of Kimberley Nordic was the fastest woman on this climb and Mac Dressler from Fernie was the winner on the men side.

On the second day, the classic race had 48 participants. The weather was excellent with some fresh snow on Sunday morning. The volunteer grooming team did an awesome job on the trails after a week of poor and wet weather. Many more volunteers peppered the course with signage, set up the stadium area and handled the distribution of the hot drinks and the delicious food from Infinitea T-Bar and Boutique of Fernie. Many local skiers climbed on the podium as winners of a Teck medal or a shiny wooden medal. Photos of the weekend action to come shortly.

A fun event for skiers of all ages and abilities. You are invited to give it a try.

Again this year, the Fernie Nordic Society will host races during the weekend of January 5-6, 2019. These are the Teck Kootenay Cup #3 and #4 of the 2019 series and will take place at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre in Fernie BC. There will be two days of races, the second of four weekends of nordic ski races organized in the Kootenays region during the season.

The event is open to skiers of all ages and abilities. Memberships to any club is not required to take part. Participants from local clubs under the CCBC organization earn points for their club toward the Kootenay Cup which will be awarded at the end of the season. Our club, the Fernie Nordic Society, has won the Cup in three previous seasons due to some great participation by our member skiers in all races.

The free ski (skate ski) technique is used on the first day and the classic technique on the second day. See more details of the races in the official Race Notice (click link to open) : race categories, schedule and suggested local accommodations.

Many took on the challenge of the Fernie Birkie

Again this year, the Fernie Birkie was held under some beautiful weather. The event got underway at 9:50 am and all skiers were back at 3:06 pm. Thirty-three participants - two from Calgary and all others from Fernie - took part in this challenge. Six of them skied the entire 50 km with an extra 12 lbs in their pack. The young Wes Robinson Shaw completed the 50 km in the Lite category. Others skied 25 km either solo or as part of a team. Prizes, medals and cheers waited for them at the end of the challenge. Wes won the best costume award for his furry outfit topped with an impressive set of antlers.
