Skiing under the moonlight

This month’s full moon was on December 29th. Unfortunately the evening sky was cloudy on that night but the trails were firm and not icy. Several skiers took this opportunity this week to go to the golf course and the Nordic Centre in the evenings to give this a try.

The sky was clear and the moon shined brightly on Monday evening so a headlamp was not even necessary at the Nordic Centre. Here are a few photos.

The next full moons will be on Jan 28, Feb 27 and March 28. Mark your calendar and let’s hope for clear skies.

New short trail at the Nordic Centre

The old Lizard Creek Loop bike trail is now open and groomed for skiing. Although not track set and not as wide as other ski trails, it has a few rollers and a rather steep descent followed by a good climb. Definitively a worthwhile challenge! The trail runs for less than 1 km along the Galloway loop on the side closer to Highway 3. It may be skied from either end. The current trail maps do not show this trail yet. Several users have enjoyed giving it a try!

2021 Fernie Streak

#FernieStreak2021 is back for a 3rd year. Get the new year started by being active on each of the 31 days of January! Registration is easy and proceeds go toward the 2020 Starlite Campaign – Not Alone campaign. Register until Dec 31 to be ready.

Starting a new season with COVID-19

A group of board members is hard at work planning the new season while we continue to deal with the pandemic conditions. A detailed protocol will come out shortly to address the kids program, adult lessons and other activities. It’s that time of year, just before the snow begins to fall again. It’s time for our Annual General Meeting … virtual edition on Thursday July 23 at 7pm! It’s never been easier to attend the AGM than it will be this year. From the comfort of your own home, reconnect with your nordic community.
We want you to join us for an evening of catching up on all things nordic skiing, voting for your favourite board members. And we’ve even got “draw prizes” from our local businesses.

Results of Flying Viking Challenge

Sunday March 15 was a perfect day to run the event. Three team members of Fernie Nordic Racers took part together with 34 adult skiers – 17 women and 17 men – how is this for equality? Everyone rushed from the start at 10:40 am to follow the course along the trails of the Nordic Centre and the Fernie Alpine Resort. A short chair lift ride was also included!

Five adult skiers completed two loops for a total of 50 km. The fastest 50K adult skiers were Naomi Lentz in 4:22 hours and Mike Bragg in 4:13 hours.
Thirty-two skiers did one loop of 25 km. The fastest 25K adult skiers were Virginia Robinson in 2:22 hours and Aaron Glover in 2:49 hours. In the Under 16 – 25K category, Wes Robinson-Shaw was the fastest with 2:20 hours. Click the icon below for the full results.

A big Thank You! to the event organizer Sam Sedlowsky who was also participating in the 25 km category. Volunteers were on hand at a food station at the ski hill and at the warming hut where there was more hot food, snacks and beverages for the skiers. Fancy wooden medals and prizes were waiting for participants at the finish. Thank you also to our generous sponsors of this event: RCR, GearHub, Heaven Boutique, Elevation Showcase and the City of Fernie.
