A Virtual Adventure in Fernie

canadian ski marathon fernie

Saturday February 6 will be the start of a virtual adventure for the many cross-country ski enthusiasts who have registered for the 55th edition of the Canadian Ski Marathonread the press release. This year, the Canadian Ski Marathon is being held exclusively in virtual mode and with more than 1,200 people registered to date. There is still time to register, as this year skiers can do so until the last day of the virtual event, March 7, 2021.

The Elk Valley Nordic Centre in Fernie has been picked as one of the recommended sites for the virtual event.

The organizing committee has created a virtual event that allows participants to meet their challenge close to home, allowing everyone to participate in our event, which is meant to be a celebration of winter. Despite the health restrictions,  with the financial support of our partners, skiers and all levels of government, we have worked hard to make this virtual event a reality and keep the legend alive.

Several options have been put in place to facilitate participation, improve the skier experience and make the event even more accessible to everyone.

Categories include distances of 15 km and up. Affordable registration fees apply. For more information, visit the official site at https://skimarathon.ca/register/fees/

Arts, fun and moose on the trails

moose on the loose Fernie

What is up with this moose at the Nordic Centre? Darren the moose will call the Nordic Centre home during February. It is hanging out on the sunny side of the warming hut. It is in fact an exhibition prepared by the Arts Station in Fernie. More tiny moose are resting along the trails. Spot them and participate in this family activity. Go to the Fernie Arts Station website for more details and download the bingo-style card … and have a great hunt!

nordic lab web

Several of our club members have found the Nordic Ski Lab website useful. The videos and instructions are clear. Videos appear to be made at the Canmore Nordic Centre. The website has a few videos free of charge and the rest is available to paying customers.

Skiing under the moonlight

full moon ski

This month’s full moon was on December 29th. Unfortunately the evening sky was cloudy on that night but the trails were firm and not icy. Several skiers took this opportunity this week to go to the golf course and the Nordic Centre in the evenings to give this a try.

The sky was clear and the moon shined brightly on Monday evening so a headlamp was not even necessary at the Nordic Centre. Here are a few photos.

The next full moons will be on Jan 28, Feb 27 and March 28. Mark your calendar and let’s hope for clear skies.
